Finding a perfect dog leash can be frustrating. They either don't hold up well or break. After searching for my dogs, I finally found 6 of the Best Dog Leashes That Made My Life Easier.
Have you ever had a dog who quickly chewed through her nylon leash? Trying to find the best dog leashes for dogs is hard! I've been through so many of them I lost count. They either broke, frayed, or simply didn't last long enough.
One day while in Seattle with Ruby, she chewed through her leash while I was sitting and talking with some people.
I didn't realize she'd been chewing on her leash. Once we got outside, her leash split in half and she was loose!
She thought it was playtime next to this busy road in downtown Seattle. Not only was I terrified for her, but the surrounding people were terrified.
Luckily all the traffic scared her so she came running back to me, but the consequences could have been fatal.
Ever since then, I've paid attention and tried out many leashes. I want to share my results on the best dog leashes I found with you on what works for Ruby.
My favorite Leashes for Dogs
After Ruby chewed through 2 nylon leashes, I moved to a rope leash. My veterinarian suggested them as a leash, good for both a small or large dog.
I love them! They are lightweight, easy to hold and don't easily break in half.
I currently have a Mendota leash I use for walking or the dog parks.
Ruby likes to hold her leash in her mouth to walk or play. Luckily, so far, she could not chew through the leash.
The Best Dog Leash Lengths
Like collars, leashes come in different lengths and widths.
The most popular are 4 inch to 6 inch leashes.
You'll want to test a few to see if the length and weight of the leash feels good for you and for your dog.
Personally, I love the 6 inch leash.
Buckles and Leash Hooks
Just like the poorly made nylon leashes, the buckles on the leashes can be sure as cheaply made.
I always look for a solid buckle that's not plastic or sometimes too heavy for the leash.
Some of these buckles on leashes are crazy hard to just clip on!
So checking out the buckles is one of the first things I do when choosing a leash for Ruby.
Weight of the Leash
A leash has to feel comfortable and be easy on my hands.
The handle loop has to be soft and has a brief stretch to it, making it easy to hold.
My favorite and most Economical Leash
I now have two Mendota leashes and love them. They are very comfortable, which makes it easy on my hands. The buckles are heavier but are adjusted for the leash width and length.
Mendota leashes come in a variety of lengths and widths.
Their leashes are very soft and good quality. It's lasted Ruby almost a year now!
Brilliant colors that don't fade as long as you don't leave them out in the sun.
I either make my leash washing solution or hand wash mine in Woolite and line dry.
I especially like that it's made in the USA.
My fancy Personalized Single Walker Leash
I love that this rope leash is 100% cotton. With Ruby's tendency to chew on leashes, this leash holds up well to those sharp puppy teeth.
Who doesn't like a personalized leash with your pet's name? You can easily add your pet's name onto a leather tag and best of all, it's FREE!
It comes in an array of beautiful colors which is great for giving to your dog loving friend.
Two of the best Double Dog Walker
After struggling to walk my dog Ruby and her cousin dog Izzy, I came across the DCBark Tangle Free Double Dog Leash .
This leash made it easy with a 60 lb and a 20 lb Goldendoodle to walk them together. I could shorten the taller dogs' section while leaving Ruby's section much longer.
Ruby could easily keep up with her cousin without being dragged around.
It comes in bright, fun colors.
The Wigizi Dual Dog leash does not tangle. With a soft gel handle, it has a 360-degree spinning handle that helps keep your dog from becoming tangled and helps keep them controlled.
The ropes, and the clasps, are quality. There is both a small and large version. The differences are the size of the handles and the thickness of the rope. The smaller one is slightly easier to hold.
Both versions do not tangle, making the Wigize Dual Leash an easy leash for multiple dogs.
Need a Retractable Double Dog Leash?
Sometimes I take Ruby's cousin out for a walk when they are staying with me. I needed a retractable dog leash for trail walking.
This leash allows for different lengths in the ropes.
I found this retractable dog leash and love it. It takes a lot less stress to walk two dogs. It forces them to stay together, and they didn't get tangled up.
It's lightweight, easy to use and extends to 16 ft. This leash holds small dogs to 110 lbs.
Best Retractable Single Dog Leash
Ruby loves this retractable dog leash for long hikes. As soon as I pick up the leash, she knows it's time to go outside.
Honestly, it's very easy to use. I always use a retractable leash for long hikes where there's few people.
It has a second securing lock, which we love and makes me feel secure in case Ruby ever gets off her leash.
The handle is soft and very comfortable to hold. I'm happy walking Ruby with this retractable leash.
As a bonus! It comes with a free water bowl and attachable poppy bag holder! Score!!!
