Substitutions
Substitutions can be handy if you're missing an ingredient or if your pup has a specific dietary need.
Here are some options:
- Pumpkin- Use mashed cooked sweet potatoes or butternut squash.
- Blueberries - Use chopped apples, bananas, or strawberries.
- Whole Wheat Flour - Use spelt, oat flour or coconut flour for a gluten-free option.
- Cinnamon - Cinnamon is safe in small quantities, but some dogs don't enjoy the taste. Simply leave it out, if desired.
- Water - If your dough is too dry, add some water, low-sodium chicken broth or vegetable broth to help moisten the dough.
Feel free to mix and match these substitutions based on what you have available and what works best for your dog's preferences and dietary needs.
Just remember to double-check that any ingredients you use are safe and healthy for your furry friend!
Equipment
Mixing Bowls - Large roomy mixing bowls work best for homemade dog treats.
Measuring Cups and Spoons - Accurate measurements are best for dog treats.
Baking Sheets - Also known as cookie sheets. Choose non-stick baking sheets or parchment paper or a silicone mat.
Rolling Pin - Using a rolling pin to roll out the dough is essential.
Cookie Cutters - My favorite cookie cutters are the bones, circles and paws. You can use any kind you wish.
Storage Containers - An airtight container will keep your dog treats remaining fresh whether in the refrigerator or on the counter.
Storage
After baking allow the treats too cool and then store in the refrigerator.
