How to Calm a Dogs Upset Stomach or Diarrhea

Some things that affect the dog’s intestinal tract are one-time events, such as eating an entire Thanksgiving turkey or drinking sea water at the beach, while others are recurrent, such as chewing mildly toxic plants or drinking toilet bowl disinfectant.

While the strategy presented here can offer help with several one-time and recurring activities and nutritional issues, these solutions are not intended to diagnose or treat dogs upset stomach or diarrhea that stems from underlying health issues.

💩 The Solutions to Calm a Dogs Upset Stomach or Diarrhea

Let's begin with step one. Let the system rest. In case of a dogs upset stomach or diarrhea and/or vomiting, try steps two and three.

There are several approaches within each step. Even one or two will help some dogs. Some dogs may require more changes than others.

🐶 Rest your Dog's Upset Stomach or Diarrhea

You should always withhold food, not water, for at least 24 hours no matter what causes your dog's stomach upset. Gradually reintroduce food by offering frequent, small meals of a simple bland diet.

Simple chicken and rice-based can diet, such as:

    • Weruva Paw Licken Chicken - canned chicken & rice
    • Nutrisource Chicken & Rice - kibble
    • Canidae Chicken and Rice - canned chicken & rice

You can also make a homemade chicken and rice mixture. Gradually return your dog to his regular diet after three to four days of chicken and rice.

Contact a veterinarian if your dog has diarrhea for longer than two days after starting to hold food or if your dog has diarrhea or vomits again after reintroducing food.

🐩 Reduce your Dogs Opportunity and Inclination to Eat and Drink Bad Things

Whenever you suspect that your dog is eating unhealthy items, reduce his opportunities and engage him in constructive activities.

Dogs often eat unhealthy food when they are bored, just like people.

🥘 Reduce Chances of Eating and Drinking Bad Things.

Make sure your house is dog-proofed if your dog is chewing on house plants or swallowing household objects.

Change to non-toxic cleaners if your dog may have been exposed to only a small amount of the products he used to clean your home. Safe options are available at many groceries.

Make sure your toilet lid is closed. This is not a water dish!!!

    🦮 Play with your Dog

Dogs enjoy interactive play because it boosts their energy levels, as well as ensures they do not swallow their toys.

You can make great toys yourself or buy interactive toys that are safe and irresistible.

🐾 Take your Dog for a Walk

Every dog should exercise every day, regardless of age, breed, or size, in order to stay mentally and physically healthy.

The average dog needs to be exercised twice per day for at least 20 minutes each time. Some dogs may require more.

Walk your dog inside a mall during bad weather or visit a local hardware store. Dog owners and dogs are welcome at most hardware stores.

🦴 Give Toys or Treats Good to Eat or Chew

If we don't provide dogs with appropriate chewy items, they'll go for shoes or sprayed garbage across the kitchen floor to exercise their jaws and teeth.

Dental exercise is provided by chewing on good chew treats, which can help to reduce boredom.

In contrast with kibble and canned food, raw meaty bones offer fun, natural nutrition and an excellent source of enzymes.

    📋 Eliminate Potential Diet Deficiencies

Breeds, ages, activity levels, and other factors affect the needs of dogs.

It is possible that a dog can consume a diet that meets industry standards for completeness, but still not meet all of his individual vitamin, mineral, trace mineral, and phytonutrient needs.

Dogs are not getting everything they need from their diet often attempt to fill the deficiency by eating things they shouldn’t.

    📖 Illuminate Potential Dietary Deficiencies

Raw food feeding. A raw diet is the closest thing to feeding your dog what its ancestors ate. When you give your dog his food in its most natural form, his digestive system can utilize the nutrients in the way it was designed to. Because of the processing nutrients have undergone in kibble, they may be available in forms that cannot be used as effectively, leading to deficiency in dogs.

Diet rotation. Rotating between different diets can reduce the impact of a health deficiency in one particular diet. Every few feedings, rotate between several different canned foods your dog enjoys.

Rotate cans from different manufacturers containing different sources of protein to maximize the benefits of rotating. The goal is to gradually switch to another kibble, ideally from a different manufacturer with a different protein source. Rotational feeding, especially between different kibble recommended for dogs with food intolerances.

Illuminate potential dietary deficiencies with a supplement. If your dog is suffering from a digestive disorder, consider adding herbal multivitamin pet supplement such as:

    • Veterinary Science Multivitamin
    • Green juju
    • or Organic Ocean Kelp

🐕‍🦺 Calm the Inflammation of your Dogs Digestive Track.

Reduce inflammation with herbs. Herbs can reduce intestinal inflammation or calm the digestive tract.

A few, but not all, of these include slippery elm, plantains, marshmallows, raspberries, certified organic goldenseal, nettles, licorice, and yucca.

    Consider herbal remedies like:

    • Animal Essentials Colon Rescue
    • Honest Kitchen Perfect Form

🧑‍⚕️ When to See your Veterinarian

For dogs that continue to vomit or refuse to drink after 24 hours, contact your veterinarian.

You should consult your veterinarian if:

    • your dog has not eaten for 48 hours
    • if your dog has bloody diarrhea,
    • if your dog continues to have diarrhea longer than two days after you withdraw food,
    • or if your dog gets diarrhea or vomiting again after you introduce food again.
    • If your dog does not improve, his condition gets worse, or any other symptoms appear.

    ⭐ Final Thoughts

Step One: The first step of resetting the system should result in diarrhea or vomiting ending within 24 to 36 hours. See your veterinarian if it doesn't.

Step two. Reducing opportunities and inclinations should produce positive results within a few days or a week.

Step three. Eliminating dietary deficiencies may take several weeks to several months to produce significant positive changes.
