Does your Dog have Diarrhea? Upset Stomach? Loss of Appetite? Or a Sensitive Stomach? Here are 4 recipes for Dogs diarrhea or upset stomach.
If you have a dog, at some point you're going to have to deal with vomiting or your dogs diarrhea. It's awful for them and for you!
I woke up one morning to find that Ruby had diarrhea all over the family room carpet. Brand new carpet no less!
She had tried to get outside because it was in 4 or 5 places all around the back door.
I couldn't be mad at her, after all, a dogs diarrhea is not their fault.
Clearly she wasn't feeling well.
Things you should keep in stock for when your dogs don't feel good:
Rice
Plain cooked white rice is the base for all recipes when you've got a dog with a diarrhea, upset stomachs, or sensitive stomachs.
Pumpkin
I love this pumpkin. It's a dry formula so you're not wasting an entire can. You can use as much or as little as you need. Pumpkin is the number one ingredient you'll add to rice to help you pups feel better.
As the day continued I noticed she kept having loose gooey icky runny sloppy diarrhea coming out her rear end.
I gave it the entire day and then decided to take her in when she also started vomiting.
Mind you Ruby is still a puppy so diarrhea all day is concerning.
The vet couldn't pin point the exact cause but we came away with several medications and a restricted diet consisting of chicken, rice, pumpkin, yogurt and as the week progressed adding in a small potato.
I was to feed her this diet until her diarrhea was gone.
He estimated about a week.
Now I was a bad doggy mom. I admit it.
By the time we'd left the veterinarian's office it was after 8 p.m. and Ruby had not eaten.
I was tired from cleaning up diarrhea, she was just plain exhausted.
So I cheated.
I stopped by the Trader Joes and bought some white rice, the plain baked chicken already prepared, mixed it and fed it to her.
Luckily by this time she was hungry and scarfed it down.
It was only one night, I figured we both needed some rest and it couldn't hurt her.
The next morning I started working on making her some recipes to begin easing her upset stomach and diarrhea.
I want to share what worked for us with Ruby's upset tummy and diarrhea:

Adding in a few more items that are easy on the stomach, but add bulk to their poops is a great idea.
If you're dog is continuing to have diarrhea, go back to the previous step where their poops were fairly normal.

At Day 7 you can also include vegetables into your dogs food.
Vegetables have a high amount of disease fighting antioxidants, which help when our pets have upset tummies, or diarrhea.
However, it's best to remember that dogs are carnivores and don't need vegetables like you and I do.
What vegetables can I add to my dogs diet?
These are the basic vegetables that can be used over and over again with your dogs meals.
I share a complete list of 32 Fruits and Vegetables your dog can eat.
Broccoli
I tend to cut the heads off of broccoli, it's the stalks that boost the immunity, while the head can cause digestive upset and some major gas!
Take my word for it on this one.
Not only is it good for our pets, the stalks also act like a toothbrush, a natural plaque-fighting toothbrush.
Carrots
Just like carrots are great for our eyesight, they are just as good for our pets eyesight.
I prefer to steam my carrots or have them cook into the mixture of my recipes above, beginning with Day 5 - 7.
Green Beans
Green beans are wonderful for extra fiber, especially if your puppy is carrying some extra weight.
They also have heart healthy Omega 3's.
Pumpkin
Pumpkin is the number 1 addition to a pet with diarrhea, constipation or sensitive stomach.
The high fiber in pumpkin easily regulates your dogs bowels and most dogs love pumpkin!
I love and highly recommend keeping this dry pumpkin or canned pumpkin on hand.
It's specially for dogs and you don't waste an entire can.
You use just as much as you need.
Sweet Potatoes
Sweet potatoes are a healthy addition to your pets diet. It can boost your pets immune system. It is full of vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber to help keep your pet regulated. In addition to cooking sweet potatoes you can dehydrate them for a tasty treat.
Zucchini
Shred steamed or raw zucchini on top of your pets meal will help keep your pet slim and adds dietary fiber.
Feeding vegetables, rice, and chicken is not a well balanced meal.
These should only be fed during times your dogs diarrhea is causing an upset tummy or constipation.
I mix canned pumpkin with dry kibble for my dogs meals
That's great. Pumpkin is a wonderful source of fiber and excellent for maintaining digestive regularity.
You mention that rice, vegetables and chicken is not a balanced meal. I feed my dogs this mix so how can i improve it to make it balanced please?
Thank you
Hi,
These rice and chicken are when your pup has diarrhea. They are not balanced meals. If you want to try to balance the meal I would swap rice for quinoa, the chicken is fine. To balance a dogs meal you'll want to have 50 - 70 % animal proteins, which includes muscle meats such as lean beef, poultry, lamb, lean pork, duck, venison, rabbit, goat, kangaroo. You don't need to add all of these, you can choose up to 4.
Some suggestions for fish includes salmon, sardines, mackerel and herring. Canned drained fish is OK, but only when packed in water, no sodium added preferred.
Liver should be pretty much be included in almost every recipe and makes up 5-10% of the secreting organs need for a balanced diet. Other organ meats are kidney, spleen, thymus, ovaries, testicles, brain and pancreas.
A calcium supplement is REQUIRED. By adding an egg with eggshells ( you're aiming for 1/2 tsp powdered eggshell per pound of food).
Fish oil should be included several times a week either by supplement or adding an oily fish like sardines, salmon, mackerel, herring per pound of food.
Non-protein vegetables should include both starchy and non-starchy vegetables. Starchy includes the sweet potato, carrots, squash, pumpkin and even peas.
Non-starchy veggies are the leafy greens, chard, green beans, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, cucumber, green pepper, zucchini and summer squashes.
Lastly, you'll want to include a multi-vitamin, mineral and green blend supplements.
Hope that helps.
I have been making and feeding homemade food to my 11 year old Bouvier for 4 years. Her kidney function was declining and I talked to a canine nutritionist that gave me a formula. 4 years later and her latest blood work was almost normal. She is fed a diet that consists of whole chicken, hearts/gizzards and liver and mixed vegetables and squashes. I add brown rice as she has aged and increased the vegetable to meat proportion. A senior dog needs less protein. I use a pwdered seaweed supplement for the calcium. She loves it and has done very well. Thanks for your thoughts on the constipation/diarrhea formula.
Do we feed them just the chicken and rice or add it to their dog food?
Hi,
When my dogs have diarrhea I remove their dog food and just go plain - chicken, rice and pumpkin for a few days.
Best of luck!
Ruby
Don't waste the leftover canned pumpkin, freeze it in amounts appropriate for your dog. Pull some out when needed, thaw and give to your dog. I warm my pup's pumpkin 🎃
