Benefits of Homemade Air Fryer Chicken Sweet Potato Dog Chews
- The chews are all natural – they contain sweet potatoes and chicken bone broth.
2. Full of fiber – Dogs need a healthy digestive system too, and sweet potatoes with chicken bone broth are packed with fiber.
Sweet potatoes are both low in fat and calories, so they don't contribute to weight gain.
3. Vitamin Rich – They are full of essential vitamins like Beta-Carotene and Vitamin C.
For making these treats, I enjoy using the Air Fryer. The air fryer helps to get all the moisture out of the treats and makes them crunchy.
I like to slice the sweet potatoes into thin slices about ⅜" thick using a mandoline slicer, which keeps them all the same size.
Dehydration time vary but usually takes about 8 -10 hours. You want to get as much moisture out of them as you can so they stay crispy and last longer.
How Long Are Homemade Sweet Potato Dog Chews Good For
The dog treats will stay fresh for 2-3 weeks at room temperature in an airtight container.
If you notice any mold or discoloration on the sweet potatoes after a couple weeks, there's probably moisture left in them. Get rid of the rest of the treats.
Making Sweet Potato Dog Chews Without a Dehydrator
If you don’t have a air fryer, you can also make the treats using your oven or dehydrator.
Using the Oven – An oven at a low temperature of around 200° degrees Fahrenheit will dry out the sweet potato treats as well. The time will vary but will take about 6-8 hours.
Using a dehydrator – The Ninja dehydrator is the one I have, it's a combination air fryer, dehydrator, grill and even bakes! It has large trays, plus it works on sweet potato chips. My dehydrator will dry out the sweet potato slices in about 10 hours.
Homemade Sweet Potato Dog Chews Tips
Either organic sweet potatoes or conventional work well, so pick whatever you like.
Wash But Don’t Peel Them – You can wash and dry the sweet potatoes and simply leave the peel on. The skin helps to provide extra nutrients.
Thinly slice your sweet potatoes – I use a mandoline slicer the cut the sweet potatoes into thin ⅜” slices. Evenly sliced sweet potatoes help to dehydrate at the same rate and more evenly.
If You Think They Need to Dehydrate Longer, They Do – If you’re wondering if the Sweet Potatoes need to dry longer; they do. No moisture is what you want in the treats, mainly because you don’t want them to mold.
Homemade Sweet Potato Dog Treats are easy, cheap, and tasty for your dog. They are also people-friendly if you want to try one. Try this recipe and see if your dog loves them as much as mine does.
How to Make Easy Air Fryer Chicken Sweet Potato Dog Chews
Ingredients:
- 1 cup chicken bone broth - you can make your own or purchase it premade. I like the Nulo Chicken Bone Broth if I don't have time to make my own.
- 1 large sweet potato
Supplies Needed:
Directions:
Step 1: Slice the potato into slices that are about as thick as a quarter. I find it best to use a mandoline to keep them evenly sliced.
Step 2: Pour broth over slices and soak for at least 3 hours or overnight. Flip them a few times to make sure everything has time to soak in the broth.
Step 3: Place the slices on the air fryer tray so that they do not overlap. Cook at 400° degrees Fahrenheit for 3 minutes, then reduce heat to 300° degrees Fahrenheit and cook for another 5 minutes.
NOTE: If your slices are cut to thick, they may need to cook a little longer at the lower temperature.
Got some leftover chicken bone broth? Feed it to your dog with their kibble or meal.

First, tell Ruby hello from Keno the giant Goldendoodle! He and Twinkie the chow/corgie loved the treats!
Ruby Doodle Dog says
Oh I'm so glad...Ruby says "hi" to Keno! Were working on some cucumber treats this weekend...Hope Keno would like those as well. They should be posted tomorrow..

Why do you use the broth?
Tammy says
The broth is for flavor. Dogs love the combination of sweet potato and chicken flavors, which is why those chicken wrapped sweet potato treats are so popular.
Ruby Doodle Dog says
Yes, my dogs love the flavor of both, sweet potatoes and chicken. I'm working on wrapping with beef now. I'll let you know how it goes.
Ruby Doodle Dog says
I love bone broth for my dogs. It's packed with nutrients, is flavorful and dogs love it.

I'm a little confused about the cooking time in the Ninja. At first you say it should take about 10 hours, but the recipe time states 3 hours 10 minutes. Then, the recipe instructions say 'Cook at 400° degrees Fahrenheit for 3 minutes, then reduce heat to 300° degrees Fahrenheit and cook for another 5 minutes'. Please advise me of what the timing should be. I would love it if they were done in 8 minutes, but I'm assuming there's a typo somewhere. Thanks so much.
Jason says
From what I can see 10 hrs was the listed time if using a dehydrator. The 3 hour portion comes from soaking the slices in the broth (or longer overnight). The actual cook time is that ~10min (3m+5m give or take).

I used white sweet potatos but cut length wise. No broth. Took all Ng time to cook in oven to get crunchy. Because I cute to thick. She still loved them. Now orange yam . Cut like chips we shall see.
Terri says
How long and we're do you dry out slices? Mine do not come out chewy. When I refrigerate they become soft.

I’m so confused. You say the ninja dehydrator cooks your potatoes in 10 hours but the instructions are only 10 and 5 minutes. I also have the ninja dehydrator , what setting do I use and is it for ten hours? Do I follow the other directions first? Please help
